Construction of new brewery in Mozambique for Cervejas de Moçambique, a subsidiary of the largest global beer brewer, AB InBev.

installation of cfa piles, franki piles, grout columns and shotcrete at zambezi breweries in mozambique

The project

The project entailed the construction of a more than 2-million hectolitre a year brewery located in Mozambique’s Marracuene district, about 30 km north of Maputo.

It is the largest investment by Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM), subsidiary of AB InBev, and by the beer sector at large in Mozambique, since CDM’s inception back in 1995.

The project involved the installation of foundation and lateral support piling for different structures of the brewery including the BBT tanks, unitanks, raw material silos, malt intake and mill house.

The challenge

The new brewery construction had a very tight timeline and a late start, making programme the main challenge on this project.

Another key challenge was the short supply of readymix concrete, due to the  long distance from existing plant to site, requiring us to use different concrete suppliers and our own concrete transit mixers to overcome the problem.

The solution

The technical solutions for the foundation and lateral support piling had to be adapted throughout the contract to ensure the most effective solutions, meaning our design team had to work together with the client’s engineers at all times. Partial handovers of the different areas were also guaranteed in order to give access to the main contractor.

The scope of works included the installation of foundation piles comprising of 142 no. CFA piles and 367 no. Franki piles with diameters ranging from 410mm to 800mm, as well as lateral support comprising of 81 no. grout columns, 117 no. CFA piles and 243m² of gunite arches.
